A Valuable Lesson I Learned From A Legendary Rock Group

If you have ever worked with me in person or remotely, or if you have received any sort of show consultation from me, you have probably heard me talk about this topic. But I want to expound on it over my next couple of posts.

I learned a very simple yet powerful faith-based lesson from reading a story about a legendary rock group that became one of the best-selling bands of all time. The band – well known for their intricate live show, featuring an assortment of theatrics and extravagant stage production – reminded me about purpose and being faithful in the little things.

This particular band had two sensational, dedicated, hardworking front men, who undoubtedly contributed to the band’s astounding success. But, their propelling to phenomenal status can accurately be attributed to the band’s inaugural choreographer/road manager, who took four very different individuals and developed them into the cohesive superstars that they were to become.

This man focused on every detail of the band’s live performance and was known to blow a referee’s whistle to stop rehearsal if something wasn’t right. He even developed several signature moves that have been a staple of the band’s show for more than 45 years!

The first thing the choreographer did was dye all the band member’s hair jet-black, so no matter where they went – together or separate – everyone knew they were a part of a single unit.

One day during rehearsal, the band had just started into a song when the lead singer reached up and began scratching his head. The choreographer blew his whistle and told the front man that he could never scratch his head onstage. The man responded with complaints about the hair dye causing his scalp to itch and asked what he was supposed to do about it while performing. The choreographer responded, “Make it into a move!” He then took the front man’s guitar and demonstrated, very theatrically, how to make an intentional spectacle out of simply scratching his head. Hence, the first of many of the band’s onstage “moves” was created.

The band’s inaugural drummer said, “It may have looked spontaneous, but every little move was planned in our band.”

That is one of the main reasons the band has had a long, successful career, starting in 1973, all the way until their final show that is set to take place in 2022!

Everything that was done onstage by the legendary rockers was done with a purpose. They were faithful in the smallest of details. Here’s a message to all my Christian artists and church worship teams: if this secular band can do everything with a purpose and be faithful in the little things, how much more should we as believers do everything with a purpose and be faithful with those details, too?
