Purpose And The Little Things - Pt. 2

A Valuable Lesson Observed On My First Production Tour

While working my first production tour, I noticed something very unique about all the event coordinators from a secular management company. In many ways, these individuals behaved themselves in more of a Christian manner than what some Christians do, concerning work ethics.

At every venue, which they were paying to use, the organizers took pictures of how everything was originally placed throughout the room during load-in. After the event was over and we were tearing down, they made sure to clean up after themselves and put everything back exactly how they had found it.

I grew up attending a Christian school, which I am so thankful for, where teachers and coaches instilled in us to “Leave the place cleaner than we found it.” Since then, I have observed how Christian’s have failed to follow such a simple but meaningful practice.

A lot of times, Christians tend to use being led by the Holy Spirit as some sort of misguided excuse to not work. I do believe in the Trinity and that we should be Spirit-led believers. However, the Bible instructs us to “Let all things be done decently and in order” (I Corinthians 14:40 KJV). I love the NIV rendering of verse 33 of that same chapter: “God is not a God of disorder.” We are to be led by the Spirit, but also do things in a proper fashion and with excellence, working “heartily, as to the Lord” (Colossians 3:23 KJV). Of the countless areas to which this would apply, afterward cleanup should be one of them. Beforehand preparedness is another.

Scripture tells us to “Play skillfully to the Lord” (Psalm 33:3). How can we be skillful in our live show if we skimp on preparation? Do we expect the Holy Spirit to pick up the slack and compensate for our unpreparedness?

It’s all about balance. Proverbs 11:1 says, “A false balance is an abomination to The Lord.” We need to have the right balance in our lives and in our music careers by being Spirit led and by being prepared.

As both artists and representatives of Christ, let us be faithful in the little things. Arrive at the venue on time. Be ready to go for sound check. Don’t leave the green room and catering a mess. Be fully invested with the people at the event (not just the crazed fans, but the cooks and janitors, also). Set up your merch in an attractive display, like you ACTUALLY want to sell something!

Everything you do today will affect your tomorrow. Start taking those steps in being faithful in the little things of your music career. Today!
