Take a moment to breathe it all in. Slowing down and shifting your perspective can help you become present in the moment. Instead of thinking about making it through the set, reframe your performance as an opportunity to share something meaningful. When your focus is on connection rather than perfection, the pressure starts to ease.

2. Setlist Strategy Matters

Even in a writers' round with only two or three songs, the flow of your set matters. 3. Use Storytelling to Your Advantage

How you introduce a song can be just as important as the song itself. Take a moment to set up your songs in a way that draws listeners in and prepares them to connect emotionally. Try this exercise: Think through how you would tell someone the story behind your song, then practice applying it to your audience. Our unique stories and struggles can be relatable on so many different levels. If we just tell an isolated story about ourselves, even if it's a good story, the audience leaves wondering, "What about me?" Instead, find ways to bridge the gap between your experience and theirs, making your performance more engaging and impactful.

4. Engage With Your Audience

Engagement is a two-way street. Beyond eye contact, body language and facial expressions also play a crucial role in creating a connection with your audience. An open posture, expressive gestures, and genuine emotion can make your performance feel more intimate and engaging. Writers' rounds, in particular, can make it easy to slip into autopilot—staring at the floor, closing your eyes the whole time, or getting lost in your own world because of the raw and intimate setting. But instead of isolating yourself, use that environment to create a deeper connection with your audience. If you’re looking down or avoiding eye contact, your audience will feel the disconnect. Something as simple as looking at a few people in the crowd can create a stronger connection and ease your nerves.

5. Prepare With Intention

Preparation can help you be present in the moment and pull you out of survival mode because you have a structure to follow.  The ability to perform with confidence starts long before you go on stage. Before taking that first step, take a deep breath and ground yourself. Slowing down allows you to fully embrace the moment and own your performance. When you have a solid plan in place, it frees your mind to be fully engaged with your performance instead of feeling like you’re in survival mode. Rehearse with the same energy and intention that you plan to bring to your performance. The more prepared you are, the more freedom you’ll have to be in the moment.
