Feeling the Music
Do you ever get caught up in the music?
Great performers have a long-lasting career because they are able to visually and emotionally pour their personality into their performance. Feeling the music is a big part of that!
Whether you’re a singer, guitarist, drummer, keyboardist, bassist or any other specialty instrument player, if you are expressing yourself emotionally and visually just as you do musically, the audience can best receive what you are trying to convey to them.
I’m not suggesting that you become an actor, where you are dramatizing or choreographing your EVERY move.
However, everything you do needs to be done with a purpose! If 30% of communication from the stage to the audience is Emotional and 60% is Visual, we need to best communicate the message of the song by expressing that we believe what we are singing or playing both emotionally and visually.
I have had multiple people over the years complement me on my drumming. A lot of them say that they love watching me play because they can see that I drum with my heart on my sleeves. If it’s a powerful drum part, dynamically, I make it look powerful. If it’s a fun upbeat song, I’m more than likely bouncing up and down on my drum throne, having a great time!
However, I wasn’t always that way..
I remember when I first started learning to twirl my drumsticks. It was even harder to learn how to do just one rotation and be able to bring it back while playing a song. During that time, I had many blisters form and break open between my index and middle finger. Even after I mastered the twirling, I still sat there straight as a statue, not even cracking a smile. Such a night and day difference when I learned I can make a connection and have an impact on the audience by taking ownership of my role from the back of the stage!
